RTX 4070 performance review across resolutions

RTX 4070 performance review across resolutions

The new RTX 4070 graphics card is a game-changer in the world of high-performance gaming and creative work. With unparalleled power and speed, this cutting-edge card is designed to deliver an immersive and visually stunning experience. Whether you're a gamer looking to play the latest titles, or a content creator seeking the ultimate in productivity, the RTX 4070 has you covered. Featuring next-generation ray tracing and AI capabilities, this graphics card will take your gaming and creative projects to the next level.

Horizon Zero Dawn

4K Gaming

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 is a high-end graphics card that offers excellent 1440p performance and can also perform reasonably well at 4K resolution, especially when combined with DLSS upscaling technology. While the RTX 4070 Ti is a better choice for those specifically looking for a 4K GPU, the RTX 4070 is still a solid option that can handle demanding games with ray tracing enabled. With the Quality mode of Nvidia's DLSS upscaler, Horizon Zero Dawn runs at 103fps, Watch Dog Legion averages 49fps with Ultra-level ray tracing and Shadow of the Tomb Raider jumps from 56fps to 87fps with Quality DLSS. DLSS 3, which features AI frame generation, can make a significant difference in performance, with Cyberpunk 2077 running at 71fps with DLSS 3 on Performance mode and frame generation enabled - a 343% improvement. However, while DLSS improves visual smoothness, some games may still feel sluggish and the RTX 4070 is best suited for 1440p gaming.

Metro Exodus

1440p Gaming

The RTX 4070 graphics card is well-suited for 1440p gaming, offering high frame rates on maxed-out game settings without the need for upscaling. In games like Metro Exodus and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, it can keep up with the more expensive RTX 4070 Ti card. Adding quality-level DLSS can further improve performance, as seen in Hitman 3, where the RTX 4070 achieved 80fps with a combination of quality DLSS and full ray tracing. The card can also handle Cyberpunk 2077’s new Overdrive Mode with quality DLSS at a viable 42fps average, and with frame generation, it ticks up to 73fps, showing that it can handle the next big frontier in game rendering tech.

Overwatch 2

1080p Gaming

It's a different scenario for RTX 4070 when it comes to playing games at the 1080p resolution due to a number of factors but don't let that deter you. The RTX 4070 can still easily achieve 100fps in most games, if you pair it with a high-end gaming CPU, it is going to get bottlenecked, especially at 1080p. Using a Core i5-11600K, the RTX 4070 was limited to the point where the RTX 3070 could keep up.

Although the Ada Lovelace hardware has an advantage when it comes to ray tracing, DLSS 3's benefits become questionable at 1080p. Even the best-quality upscaling at 1080p can make the overall image appear soft and blurry, unlike at higher resolutions where it offers a noticeable improvement. Moreover, you may not need the extra AI-generated frames.

However, at 1440p, the RTX 4070 performs exceptionally well, outpacing the RTX 3070 and rendering the RTX 3080 effectively obsolete, especially when playing with ray tracing and DLSS 3. Additionally, it consumes less electricity, which is a nice surprise.
